This morning, we participated in a conference call hosted by Senator John Ensign focused on small businesses and the impacts of pending Healthcare legislation, especially the pending Senate bill.
Senator Ensign notes that it is VERY important that businesses and their employees contact Senate members and tell them how damaging the proposed bill will be on small businesses.
Key components with a negative impact:
$2.5 TRILLION expansion of Government (in addition to the $1 trillion spending bill yesterday).
$500 BILLION tax increase. Taxing begins in 2010 while benefits don’t start until 2014.
$500 BILLION cuts to Medicare.
10-13% faster increases in healthcare costs, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
Likely unemployment increases.
The good news is that more than 60% of people polled do NOT support this bill. The time is now to defeat it and then make the changes that would actually reduce healthcare costs like:
Small business health plans
Real, national tort reform
Incentivizing healthy behavior (Safeway saved over 40% in 4 years of doing this)
The target states are: Lieberman (CT), Nelson (NB), Lincoln (AR) and Webb (VA). However, all Senators need to hear from businesses AND their employees. If this bill passes the Senate, it is likely to become law by procedural maneuvering with the House.
Take action today. Share this information with your employees and ask that they consider taking action as well.
